Earthly Narratives: Cultivating Livable, Wondrous, and Just Communities
with Caili Crow, Cathryn Ploehn, Alex Beasley

Cathryn (Cat) Ploehn (she/they) is an interaction designer and professor at the School of Design and Creative Technologies at The University of Texas at Austin. Her data visualization work interrogates how to design for livability in the midst of climate crisis and injustice. Escaping from the captivity of extractive data visualization trends, her research practice, Feral Data Visualization, builds theories and practices for designing data for livability. Feral data visualization demands an embrace of place-based, situated, embodied, vegetized, and feral forms of visual pattern making that de-estrange us from ecological and social community. Her work has been featured in the Museum of Human Achievement, IEEE Vis Arts Program, Eyeo Festival, and has been longlisted in the 2023 Information is Beautiful Awards. She holds a Master of Design in Design for Interactions from Carnegie Mellon University.

Caili Crow is a San Antonio-based dramaturg and storyteller specializing in stories of enchantment as environmental advocacy. She holds a degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and a masters degree in Playwriting and Dramaturgy from the University of Glasgow. She was a 2021 Kennedy Center Dramaturgy Intensive Fellow and served as the 2021-2022 Dramaturgy Apprentice at the Asolo Repertory Theatre, where she worked on the world premiere musical Knoxville by Frank Galati, Lynn Ahrens, and Stephen Flaherty. Her research centers on interdisciplinary storytelling across music, movement, and text; peacebuilding and the arts; and fairy tales and folklore in contemporary literature and performance. Most recently, she was the dramaturg and an ensemble member for Mother Tree at The Vortex, and is working with the The Digital Development Project to launch a new initiative connecting emerging playwrights and emerging new play dramaturgs beyond locational barriers.

Alex Beasley is Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches courses in the history of capitalism, the history of energy, urban history, the history of race and gender, and U.S. empire. He is the author of Expert Capital: Houston and the Making of a Service Empire, forthcoming from Harvard University Press. He is also co-editing, with Jessica Levy, a volume entitled Capitalism and the American Century: Towards a Global History of Postwar America (under contract with The University of Pennsylvania Press). He also serves as the Associate Editor for Book Reviews at Enterprise and Society.
