La Raza Cósmica

Created for its premiere performance during FuturX 2020: Entra al Laberinto, La Raza Cósmica by ProyectoTeatro once again shines on the VORTEX Virtual Channel as a Video on Demand. Adapted from José Vasconcelos’ essay of the same title, La Raza Cósmica explores and critiques the work which was published in 1925. Through the lens of a troupe of clowns, Vasconcelos’ theory that traditional, exclusive concepts of so-called "race" and nationality can be transcended in the name of humanity's common destiny are dissected. The underlying European-centric tenets of this theory are exposed through comparison to lived experience, modern stories, and history. Combining clowning, dance, egg chaos, and poignant projections, La Raza Cósmica is a powerful performance that speaks to the current conversation in America about race, particularly in relation to Latinidad.

The performance of La Raza Cósmica is in Spanish, with English subtitles. The run time is one hour, ten minutes.
