For three weekends the Avante Theatre Project, The VORTEX, Teatro Vivo, and ProyectoTEATRO, presents the third annual FuturX Festival of new and avant-garde LatinX performance. This 3-weekend Festival celebrates the many permutations and intersections of LatinX identity in the 21st Century and beyond, featuring work that dives deep into the complexities of LatinX identity.
We welcome everyone who desires a Latinidad that explores the myriad ways of being LatinX, especially when being LatinX intersects with being queer, trans, mixed race, African diaspora, indigenous, disabled, a woman, or anyone else that has struggled to find a voice in traditional theatre.
As the featured flagship performance of FuturX Festival 2020, ProyectoTEATRO’s Los Contemporáneos will be performed live on stage at The VORTEX for 6 amazing performances, each unique and live-streamed.
FuturX Festival highlights virtual, original performances created for the festival by dozens of artists including Florinda Bryant, Marina de la Fuente, Marina DeYoe-Pedraza, Krysta Gonzales, Lily Gonzalez, Siri Gurudev, Line 720, Lilli Lopez, Chola Magnolia, Jessica Peña, Eva Margarita, Gricelda Silva, Teatro Quarantine, and Tia Diosas.
ABOUT
FuturX Festival is curated by Rudy Ramirez, Artistic Director of Avante Theatre Project and Associate Artistic Director of The VORTEX. Ramirez has received 5 B. Iden Payne Awards for Outstanding Direction and was named Best Director in the 2017 The Austin Chronicle Readers’ Poll. He works with numerous companies, staging work at the Southwestern University, Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, the Long Center for the Performing Arts, and the Santa Cruz Theater. He has achieved national recognition as a finalist for the 2015 NNPN Director’s Fellowship and the 2018 TCG Alan Schneider Award. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Directing at University at Massachusetts at Amherst.
ProyectoTEATRO serves as a cultural organization and a social project with the mission of promoting and preserving Latin American culture through the arts in Spanish. ProyectoTEATRO’'s vision is to make the arts accessible to the entire community, with a focus on the Latino population, in order to reduce the sociocultural differences of today's society. “We do theater because life is not enough”.
Teatro Vivo is dedicated to producing quality bilingual theater accessible to all theater audiences and artists. Teatro Vivo reflects the heart and soul of the Latino reality by opening a unique window for all to share in this experience. Inspired by the power of theater to educate and entertain, Teatro Vivo produces and promotes Latino theater that showcases the Latino experience, accessible to all audiences, especially those underserved by the arts.
The VORTEX has advanced cutting-edge theatre in Austin for over 30 years by conjuring urgent, unashamed art to create action in a shifting age, embracing diverse communities, breaking down barriers, and elevating inclusive discourse from our home in Austin, Texas. The VORTEX enlivens humanity with magical green new theatre at The Butterfly Bar and Sanctuary. The VORTEX’s art reflects diversity of people and voices from the global majority and honors sustainability and environmentalism.
Durante tres fines de semana, del 6 al 21 de noviembre del 2020, VORTEX, Teatro Vivo, ProyectoTEATRO y Avante Theatre Project presentarán nuestro tercer Festival FuturX: un festival anual de actuaciones nuevas y de vanguardia de LatinX. Este festival de 3 fines de semana celebrará las múltiples permutaciones e intersecciones de la identidad LatinX en el siglo XXI y en el futuro. Se presentarán obras que exploran las complejidades profundas de la latinidad.
Este año, nos reuniremos virtualmente en un LABERINTO interactivo en donde el público podra pasear de un Zoom Room a otro Zoom Room para experimentar una serie de obras de artistas cuya latinidad es queer, trans, feminista, afrolatinx e indígena. Dichas obras incluirán: la adivinación por cartas de Loteria, sesiones de coaching personal, burlesque, rituales mágicos, unas tías divinas, sesiones de DJ y más. Los días 20 y 21 de noviembre a las 21:00 horas, presentaremos nuestro evento principal: una transmisión virtual del nuevo trabajo de ProyectoTEATRO que explora y critica la “Raza Cosmica” de José Vasconcelos.
FuturX Festival 2020 destaca obras originales virtuales creadas para el festival por decenas de artistas como ProyectoTEATRO, Ben Bazan, Florinda Bryant, Marina de la Fuente, Marina DeYoe-Pedraza, Krysta Gonzales, Lily Gonzales, Siri Gurudev , Línea 720, Lilli Lopez, Chola Magnolia, Nava Mau, Jessica Peña, Eva Margarita, Gricelda Silva, Teatro Quarantine y Tía Diosas.
El comisario del Festival FuturX es Rudy Ramirez, el Director Artístico de Avante Theatre Project y el Director Artístico Asociado de The VORTEX. Ramírez ha recibido 5 premios B. Iden Payne por su dirección teatral sobresaliente y fue nombrado el Mejor Director por la encuesta de lectores del Austin Chronicle en 2017. Trabaja con varias compañías y ha dirigido obras teatrales en Southwestern University, el centro cultural mexicano-americano Emma S. Barrientos (MACC), el Long Center for the Performing Arts y el teatro Santa Cruz. Ha logrado reconocimiento nacional como finalista de la Beca de Director NNPN 2015 y con el Premio TCG Alan Schneider 2018. Actualmente está cursando una maestría en dirección en la Universidad de Massachusetts en Amherst.

ProyectoTEATRO estrenará Raza Cosmica (título provisional) en el escenario de The VORTEX como parte del Festival. ProyectoTEATRO funge como una organización cultural y un proyecto social con la misión de promover y preservar la cultural Latinoamericana por medio de las artes en español. ProyectoTeatro tiene como visión hacer las artes accesibles a toda la comunidad, con un enfoque en la población Latina, para poder así, disminuir las diferencias socioculturales de la sociedad presente. “Hacemos teatro porque la vida no alcanza.”
Teatro Vivo se dedica a producir teatro bilingüe de gran calidad, accesible para todas las audiencias y artistas de teatro. Teatro Vivo refleja el corazón y el alma latina a través de una ventana extraordinaria, a través de la cual el público comparte esta experiencia. Inspirado por el poder del teatro para educar y entretener, Teatro Vivo produce y promueve el teatro latino mostrando la experiencia cotidiana latina de una manera accesible para todos, sobre todo para aquellos que normalmente no tienen acceso a las bellas artes.
El VORTEX ha estado presentado teatro de vanguardia en Austin, Texas durante más de 30 años. Ha sabido conjurar el arte urgente y sin vergüenza para promover acción en una era cambiante y alojar a las comunidades diversas con brazos abiertos, rompiendo barreras y elevando el discurso inclusivo. El VORTEX anima a la humanidad con un nuevo teatro verde y mágico en The Butterfly Bar and Sanctuary. El arte del VORTEX refleja la diversidad de voces y de personas de la mayoría de la población mundial y honra la sustentabilidad y el ambientalismo.
Avante Theatre Project fue fundado por Rudy Ramirez en 2018 para desarrollar, producir y promover obras nuevas y de vanguardia de artistas latinos que celebran las complejidades, las contradicciones y las intersecciones de la latinidad. Avante ha producido el Festival FuturX durante tres años y tiene planeado elaborar tres nuevas obras basadas en las obras de Federico García Lorca a través de una residencia artística con Fusebox y Texas Performing Arts.
